Ecological Issue Reflection
For this project, I studied Colony Collapse Disorder. After doing some stidying, I decided that there was not enough data specifically about the La Plata County to come to any conclusions about exactly what to do about Colony Collapse, so I decided to make my management plan more about collecting data for the La Plata County instead of executing on behalf of worldwide data. One of my plans was about collecting data to find out of Varroa Mites are a problem in La Plata County. Another was collecting data to find out the effects of Noenicotinoids on honey bee populations. My last plan was to increase honey bee populations.
My strongest management plan was my plan about collecting data about Varroa mites. It was my most straight-forward plan that was going to get the job done in the best way possible. It was also the most detailed plan I wrote, and had little or no loopholes. I can say I am the most proud of it as well, as it was the plan I spent the most time on. What really makes is great is how it is able to collect tons of data in a short time on a subject that is important to honey beekeepers worldwide. I think this idea goes within my entire management plan; the idea that my management plan is aimed towards the La Plata County, but they can be applied worldwide. Overall, managing Varroa mites was the strongest part of my plan because it is efficient, straight-forward, and applicable world-wide.
Writing this paper in a technical manner has helped me improve my technical writing from the last paper greatly. My research skills are still not the greatest, but this project has helped me immensely with researching. I did not do as well as I would have wished on the DNS project mainly because I didn’t spend enough time studying, and that hurt my report quite a bit. I felt more confident in my knowledge of the subject I chose to study in this project was able to go into much detail when talking about it. I didn’t even know scholarly articles existed before this project, so learning about scholarly articles was a nice piece of knowledge to have, since they are much better sources of developed, studied, and backed up information, instead seeing what is most common between sites that I have read. In text-citations is also a skill that I developed during this project, since we had to have quite a few of them throughout out plans. I’m not totally sure how much I will be using them in the future, but it will definitely be something I remember for the rest of the year so I may use it for other biology projects and write-ups we have for the rest of the year.
I learned that ecology is a huge part of everyone’s lives and that it really affects all of us. Ecology and ecological issues area much bigger and more interesting thing that I had originally thought they were and I find this to be quite fascinating. My ecological issue, CCD, has a huge effect on almost everyone around us, and so studying it made it that much more fun to think about, since, technically, I could be saving millions of people from what would be a huge hit to almost everything they buy. Basically, I really learned that ecology is something that is a huge part of my own life, and I have found that ecology is an important part of everyone’s lives, and it is something that I will be much more conscious about in the future.
This project, as I said before really opened my eyes to the sheer importance of ecology, and how much it affects each and every one of us. I am glad that I was able to learn about how much of an impact these ecological issues can have on us, and was glad to be presented the opportunity to think more deeply about them and really look at how to fix these situations. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to see things the same way, as I am much more conscious about ecology itself, and what it means to human life in and of itself. I can look at a situation and think about it from a different perspective and really think about how it will affect each thing involved in the situation.
