This I Believe Project Reflection
This essay was all about finding out one of our core beliefs and dissect it through an essay. To help dig down and find out what our core beliefs were, we responded to how we felt about many different scenarios and questions, including things like "is stealing okay," and "are the police your friends?" Then we went over some This I Believe essays from the official NPR website and looked at the different, important parts of those essays. Is there a strong hook? How does the author connect their belief with our own personal life? Does it sound like the author is speaking to you through their words? These are all things we took into consideration to help us make the best essays possible
For my core belief I got it through the activities we did. We were righting three things we believed on sticky notes, and I wrote one down and I could just feel it. I really just began to think about that belief, and through my reflection I was able to realize how applicable it was to my own personal life, especially recently. I think that finding this belief helped me grow as a person because I it just really opened my eyes to how you can find the coolest things through experimentation. Also, finding my belief made me realize how I can actively listen more in my life, and how even through my own experiences I can always strive to be better and focusing on people; their thoughts and emotions.
I really like the personal connection I made to my belief. My personal connection was that through going from a loud, rambunctious family in which everyone hardly ever listened to each other to just living by myself and my mother. "my life went from a loud yell to a soft whisper." I was really happy with the idea that from moving from one environment to another I could learn a new skill that I never even knew existed before hand. What I mean by that is that one needs to be truly silent, both physically and "consciously." "The idea of listening is not one of just hearing everything going on around you and taking it all in, but giving something your undivided attention and understanding that thing on a deeper level. For one to listen in such a way, they must be completely silent, inside and out. Their thoughts must be focused on what they are “listening” to." Overall I am just happy with the way my paper turned out in a personal sort of way.
One thing that I think I need to work on is the overall flow of the essay. On my final edit, I ended up just taking an entire paragraph out because it just didn't make sense or fit in with the overall theme of the essay. The ideas make sense, and they have some logical order, but it still feels a tad bit chunky. What I could do to make it flow a bit better is work on my big picture. I don't do the greatest job of really giving a good overview of my whole belief until my final paragraph. I think that If I took a little time to add a bit more reflection in between my personal connections I could achieve my goal of making my belief statement more clear in my essay.
I feel as if I can be a more respectful person to other people's beliefs. Many people have different beliefs because they were born and raised in different settings. In that respect, many people have very different views about life. I think that most of these views should be recognized and respected, but I also think that there should be greater beliefs that should be shared among all people. I think that things such as mass killing and genocide should be things that people believe are wrong. I think that if people shared these kinds of views and beliefs the world would be a better place. People's views and beliefs should always be respected, unless their beliefs could bring about intentional harm to other people.
